Psychosocial Rehabilitation/Réadaptation Psychosociale Canada (PSR RPS Canada)

PSR RPS Canada is a professional organization with members representing a wide range of roles who are committed to the use of recovery practices for people who have mental illnesses and/or substance use issues. The community is comprised of family members, people with lived experience, service providers, leaders within the service system, researchers and organizations dedicated to using the tools of psychosocial rehabilitation.

Psychosocial Rehabilitation

It is well established that psychosocial rehabilitation promotes recovery.

Psychosocial rehabilitation (PSR) refers to professional mental health services that bring together approaches from the rehabilitation and mental health field. Psychosocial Rehabilitation services are evidence-based best practices where people with mental health and substance use issues identify their recovery path and reclaim their quality of life. Clinical and therapeutic interventions focus on helping individuals develop skills and access resources needed to increase their capacity to be successful and satisfied in the living, working, learning, social and spiritual environments of their choice. PSR includes a wide continuum of services and supports. It is a collaborative, person-directed, strengths based and individualized approach.

Recovery

Recovery in mental health and substance use refers to people living a satisfying, hopeful and contributing life even if they experience ongoing symptoms of a mental health problem or substance use issue. Recovery is personal and looks different for everyone: recognizing every person’s uniqueness and right to determine their own path to mental health and well-being. People with lived experience are the experts of their life and experiences and recovery must focus on hope, dignity, self-determination and social inclusion.

The Vision

PSR Canada envisions a national community where people living with mental health and/or substance use issues achieve their full potential and thrive in an inclusive society.

The Mission

PSR Canada provides expert leadership for an evidence-based community of practice in psychosocial rehabilitation and recovery in mental health and substance use services in partnerships with people with lived experience, their families and service providers.

Psychosocial rehabilitation tools are essential to implementing recovery practices, and PSR Canada believes that education is key.

PSR Canada established its Certified Psychosocial Rehabilitation Recovery Practitioner (CPRRP) designation in 2016 to provide a credential that recognizes competencies in the practice of recovery services. The certification is based on the Competencies of Practice for Canadian Recovery-Oriented Psychosocial Rehabilitation Practitioners of PSR RPS Canada and the Guidelines for Recovery-Oriented Practice from the Mental Health Commission of Canada.

A progression of steps leads to the achievement of the highly valued CPRRP credential and entry into a flexible structure for lifelong learning and the development of recovery-orientated practices.
